I was really inspired by your before and after photos, thanks!

I've been busy in my workroom today - why didn't I do this sooner?!

I purchased a few plastic boxes and sorted the area used for processing books.

It is going to be more helpful for my colleague to have labelled boxes for parent helpers on the days when I'm not at work. Beats odd piles of books and scribbled notes!

Day 2 Tasks

Papatoetoe East Primary school is a decile 3 school with 500 pupils. Our ethnic mix is quite diverse consisting of Paficia, Indian, European, Maori and Asian children many of whom are recent immigrants to New Zealand and speak English as an additinal language.

Our community is very supportive of the school, and parents have very high expectations of their children's education. This is evidenced by over 90% turnout over the last five years for the twice yearly parent/child/teacher interviews. These interviews, which are largely child led, put an emphasise of literacy and numeracy for the children. During the interviews we explain the importance of reading to children at home and school, visiting the library and reading with the children on a daily basis.

We are a Duffy School and as part of this programme the children in the school receive a regular selection of books to keep and all the siblings who are under 5 years receive complementary books on their birthdays.

Our library, which opens daily at 8.30 and over both school breaks, is open to the parents and we have a special section that they are encouraged to use.

We have just completed a library weed with the support of the National Library advisors and are now in the exciting stage of purchasing new and replacement books to enhance our library collection. Our first purchase has been of a selection of graphic novels and comics. We are now looking at buying a selection of books in languages other than English. The buying of new books is in part funded by the community through the fundraising carried out by the Friends of School committee.

The opening of a new library is allowing us as a school to focus on the role of the library within the school and the broader community.

Meadowbank School Library

Meadowbank School

Meadowbank Primary is a split site school consisting of approx 660 pupils. The role is forecast to exceed 700 by year end.

We are very fortunate to have two libraries; one for juniors and the other for senior children. However, this is all about to change in term three. Next week, work is due to start on our new library under the school hall. Unfortunately we have run out of classroom space for our ever increasing school roll, so our two libraries have to merge into one new library. There will be a lot of work to do in setting up a new library but it is also very exciting. The photos I have taken are of the junior library and the back workroom that also house teacher resources.

These photos show the green bins that we use for our data entry for new books received into the library. We have developed our own in house data entry system, which compliments the two libraries currently in use at Meadowbank School. Once we integrate the two libraries into one resource room we will need to revisit the data entry system.

We also currently use other plastic storage facilities to store book covering materials, posters, book covers and books that require mending. By having a place for most things, it helps keep the relatively small and compact work area tidy.

This is our workspace, it is a shared space within the central resource room. As this is all recent renovations we have the space which we are now using effectively. We have added plastic crates to the space which are for the various stages of book repair or preparation. This has been very useful in that I can grab a box of books that just need taping and tape them without having to sort them and double handle. This also means any helpers can come in grab a box and know what to do with it. We are also in the process of rearranging all the readers in the resource room, relabelling boxes and numbering books so that they are easier to be reshelved. We are in the process of applying for an ASB grant to get new shelves, computers etc.

Hi everyone! Am having yet another go at this!

I did enjoy the course,it was most informative. My predecessor has taught me well though and some of the systems are already in place. I will get better shelf labeling in my office,with a box for books to be repaired rather than just piling them up! and the PTA has agreed to buy new shelf dividers for the library.My office is still a dumping ground! As you can see! What a mess! Perhaps I should call these the before photos! The balloons are from the schools birthday and the Blues poster put up by staff to remind me where I live now!I would tidy it in preparation to take the photos and then would forget the camera and it would be a shambles again. Am going to be much firmer this term! But then I also tend to say oh yeah but it in there I'll deal with it! Need more hours in a day! I am going to update the procedures manual and put it in the back of the library loan barcode folder so that it is all in one place. I love my job! And MENPS is a great fun place to work. Always looking forward to learning more and improving our Information Centre.
